Institutionalised Healthcare Services

Sometimes older persons with medical conditions become frail, sick and bedridden may need residential facilities because the person is unable to care for themselves or be cared for within their own homes.

Residential care:Healthcare services are provided within institutions like nursing homes and chronic sick hospitals for older persons who usually stay longer than one year.

Convalescent care:Healthcare services are provided within institutions like the community hospital to facilitate recovery and/ or the regaining of functional ability following an acute health-related illness.

Respite care:Institutionalised healthcare services also provide respite care for older persons to provide temporary relief for the caregivers of the older persons. For enquiries on respite care, approach the nearest nursing home or community hospital.

    Types of facilities
Residential careNursing Home: Nursing Homes for the elderly provide care for the older persons with medical conditions requiring long term daily nursing care and/or assistance in activities of daily living and they have no caregiver to look after them at home or the caregiver is unable to provide the nursing care required.
Chronic Sick Hospital: Chronic Sick Hospitals provide long term skilled daily nursing and frequent medical care to older persons with advanced, complicated medical conditions with poor functional ability (i.e. highly dependent or unable to perform activities of daily living) and requires a greater level of care and supervision. Examples would include persons with tracheostomy requiring frequent suctioning, or with extensive bedsores.
