Types of Diseases

  • Rats are well known for transmitting a variety of human diseases, the most important being plaque and rat bite fever.

The plaque bacteria is transmitted from one rat to another. When a rat dies of plaque, the infected fleas leave the body to infect other animal hosts and human beings may be bitten and become secondary infected.

Ways to Prevent Infestation

  • The presence of rat infestation can be recognized by a number of tell-tale signs such as:-

    • Droppings
    • Runways
    • Rubmarks
    • Burrows
    • Gnawings
    • Tracks

Control Methods:

  1. Environmental Sanitation

    • Store foodstuff in tightly covered containers
    • Any spillage of food on the floor should be removed and disposed of immediately
    • Bag rubbish and dispose of them properly

  2. Rodent-Proofing

    • Mechanical proofing, eg. Seal all crevices and structural defects which may provide entry points for rats
    • Use of repellents

  3. Trapping/Use of Baits

    The public can use rat traps or glue boards to catch rats or mice in their domestic premises. If the infestation persists, you are advised to call a pest control operator to assist in the control measures.

  4. Use of Rodenticides

    Rat poisons are usually incorporated in bait, dust or water formulations.
